Quicksmart literacy and numeracy are both educational programs designed to develop skill development. The programs were developed by a research team at the University of New England.
Quicksmart emphasises the role of automaticity in learning. The program is called “Quicksmart” because it encourages students to become “quick” in their response speed and “smart “ in their strategy use when learning basic academic skills. Quicksmart aims to free up working memory so students can engage meaningfully in demanding school activities like problem solving, multiple computations and activities that require comprehension of text.
Students at Maitland High School love attending Quicksmart and often comment it is the highlight of their day. The program results in students being more able and willing to participate in classroom activities, growth in self- esteem, and increased confidence.
