English at Maitland High School
English is central to students’ learning, providing the skills and knowledge needed to communicate effectively, think critically and creatively, and engage confidently in the world around them. At Maitland High School, our English program explores a rich variety of spoken, written, and visual texts, helping students understand how meaning is shaped, conveyed, and interpreted across different contexts.
As students progress through their schooling, they encounter increasingly complex ideas, language forms, and text types. Proficiency in English enables them to become:
- Confident communicators
- Critical and imaginative thinkers
- Lifelong learners
- Informed, active participants in Australian society
We believe the study of English should foster a love of literature and learning. Our programs challenge and inspire students, encouraging them to experiment with ideas and expression, work collaboratively, think independently, and reflect on their learning.
Celebrating a Love of Learning
At Maitland High School, we foster enthusiasm for English through regular events and competitions that bring language and literature to life, including:
- Poetry Week and our annual Poetry Competition
- Book Week, with week-long celebrations such as the whole-school dress up day, Blind Date with a Book, bookmark-making workshops, scavenger hunts, and themed activities
- Easter English Technique Hunt, where students search for hidden eggs containing riddles and questions to exchange for prizes
- Flash Fiction Competitions with bookshop gift vouchers as prizes
- Debating teams and access to public speaking competitions at local and state levels
These events create opportunities for all students to engage creatively with English, develop confidence in their skills, and connect with the joy of reading, writing, and speaking.
