Year 9

Year 9 is is a critical year for establishing the study habits that will lead to success in Senior years. It is also a critical time in the development of adolescents as they mature to become young adults. The staff at MHS are committed to supporting their students so they are able to maintain motivation and a positive outlook on their education.

Everyone in year 9 studies English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, PDHPE.
Students can choose from an exciting range of elective subjects such as Music, Visual Arts, Photography, Engineering, Electronics, iSTEM, Drama, Outdoor Recreation, PASS, Robotics and Programming, Child Studies, Multimedia, Dance, Timber, Metals and Food Technology.

Year 10

Year 10 students are supported by a strong welfare team and dedicated subject teachers. Everyone studies English, Maths, Science, PD/H/PE, History, and Geography. Many are in the second year of elective subjects selected in Year 9 and are developing an in-depth understanding of these subject areas. As everyone works towards attaining their RoSA, Year 10 students are thinking about and planning for their subject selections for Year 11 Preliminary and Year 12 HSC.

Students receive an information book that describes all of the subjects on offer at Maitland High School in Term 3. There is further information given to parents and students at an information evening at the school. This is followed by an individual 30 minute interview with each student to discuss future directions, subject choices and career directions.

Our Year 10 students have many opportunities to be involved in leadership and representative roles and to participate in extra-curricular activities such as:

One week Snow excursion for high achievers, two Work Experience placements in Term 2 and 4, subject specific excursions, Year 10 Celebration of Achievement Evening at East Maitland Bowling Club in Term 4.

Year 11

Year 11 is an important time for students as they adjust to their senior schooling and prepare themselves for the HSC next year.

We offer an array of subjects in the senior years, allowing students to study content that will set them up for tertiary education and the workforce. Many students also attend TAFE as part of their senior schooling and also undertake School-Based Traineeships.

Our Year 11 Life Ready course is held early May. This mandatory course addresses various life skills young people may find useful in the near future. The course has a strong focus on Road Safety, Party Safety, Study Skills and Time Management. This course is delivered via a three day camp (Adventure Park Forster) and at school for students unable to attend camp.

Year 11 are also invited to attend Rotary Young Driver Awareness (RYDA) Program at Tocal in Term 3.

Subject choices: All year 11 students study English. The remaining 8 units of study are completed through selection of elective subjects listed below.

Year 11 students have plenty to look forward to. Everyone is encouraged to attend the Year 11 Life Ready Camp and the RYDA (Rotary Young Drivers Awareness) Program. Also our Sports House Captains are Year 11 students, and these excellent leaders express their interest in being elected early in the year.

Our Year 11 students are active members of various extra-curricular activities across the school. This includes but is not limited to: Sporting teams, Debating teams, Dance Ensemble, Drama Club, Music Ensembles and Leadership Programs.
