School Years

Year 7

Year 7 is an exciting year of new beginnings, where students build the foundations for success in high school. At Maitland High School, we are committed to ensuring every student feels supported, connected and confident as they develop new friendships, embrace new learning opportunities and become active members of our school community.

All Year 7 students study English, HSIE, Mathematics, Science, PDHPE, Mandatory Technology, Visual Arts, Music and Languages. Throughout the year, students also participate in a range of wellbeing programs, including Backflips Against Bullying and Cyber Safety workshops, designed to build resilience, respectful relationships and positive online behaviours. In Week 3 of Term 2, students attend the Great Aussie Bush Camp, providing opportunities to develop teamwork, confidence and lasting friendships beyond the classroom.

Year 8

Year 8 is a year of growth, where students continue to build on the knowledge, skills and relationships established in their first year of high school. At Maitland High School, we encourage students to challenge themselves, strengthen their independence and actively engage in the many opportunities available both in and beyond the classroom.

All Year 8 students study English, HSIE, Mathematics, Science, PDHPE, Mandatory Technology, Visual Arts and Music. Students also participate in a taster elective each semester, allowing them to explore a range of subject areas before selecting electives for Year 9. Throughout the year, students take part in the Backflips Against Bullying wellbeing program, supporting the development of respectful relationships, resilience and positive wellbeing.

Year 9

Year 9 is a pivotal year as students consolidate the study habits and learning skills that will support success in their senior years. It is also an important stage of adolescent development, where students continue to build independence, resilience and confidence. At Maitland High School, we are committed to supporting every student to remain motivated, engaged and positive about their education.

All Year 9 students study English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography and PDHPE. Students can choose from an exciting range of elective subjects, including Music, Visual Arts, Photography, Engineering, Electronics, iSTEM, Drama, Outdoor Recreation, PASS, Robotics and Programming, Child Studies, Multimedia, Dance, Timber, Metals and Food Technology. Throughout the year, students also participate in a range of wellbeing programs, including Social Futures (drug and alcohol education) and Enlighten Education's Good Fellas and Butterfly Effect programs, which promote respectful relationships, positive decision-making and personal wellbeing.

Year 10

Year 10 is an important milestone as students work towards attaining their Record of School Achievement (RoSA) and begin planning for their senior years. At Maitland High School, we support students to make informed decisions about their future pathways while continuing to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed for success in Years 11 and 12.

All Year 10 students study English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography and PDHPE, while continuing with the two elective subjects they selected in Year 9 and pick up an additional third elective subject. Throughout the year, students participate in the Love Bites Respectful Relationships program, promoting healthy relationships, respectful behaviours and informed decision-making.

As students prepare for senior study, they are supported through a comprehensive subject selection process, including a Year 11 Information Evening, subject selection resources and individual pathway interviews to help guide future study and career aspirations. Students also have the opportunity to participate in Work Experience, explore a range of leadership opportunities and apply for the Maitland High School Rewards Snow Trip. This unique reward recognises students who have consistently demonstrated a positive commitment to learning, attendance, uniform and behaviour throughout Years 7 to 10.

Year 11

Year 11 marks the beginning of senior school, where students take greater responsibility for their learning while working towards the Higher School Certificate (HSC). At Maitland High School, we support students to achieve their academic goals, explore future career pathways and develop the skills and confidence needed for success beyond school.

All Year 11 students study English, with the remainder of their pattern of study made up of elective subjects chosen to suit their interests, strengths and post-school aspirations. Students can select from a diverse range of courses across academic, vocational education and training (VET), creative and performing arts, technologies and practical learning areas. Many students also undertake TAFE courses or School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs) as part of their senior studies.

Throughout the year, students complete the mandatory 25-hour Life Ready course, preparing them for life beyond school through learning focused on independence, wellbeing, financial literacy, relationships, road safety and responsible decision-making. Students also participate in the Road Whyz road safety program, promoting safe and responsible driving behaviours as they begin their journey towards becoming independent road users.

Year 11 students are encouraged to embrace the many opportunities available at Maitland High School, including leadership roles such as Sports House Captains and a wide range of extracurricular activities that support personal growth, leadership and community involvement.

Year 12

Year 12 is the culmination of students' secondary education as they work towards achieving their Higher School Certificate (HSC) and preparing for life beyond school. At Maitland High School, we are committed to supporting every student to achieve their personal best through high-quality teaching, individual guidance and a strong focus on wellbeing as they navigate this important and rewarding year.

Students complete their chosen HSC courses while receiving ongoing support with study skills, examination preparation, post-school pathways and career planning. Whether students are pursuing university, vocational education and training, apprenticeships, traineeships or employment, our staff work closely with them to ensure they are well prepared for their next steps.

Every Year 12 student is assigned a teacher mentor through our tailored HSC Mentor Program, providing personalised guidance, encouragement and academic support throughout their final year. Students also attend subject-specific HSC Study Days, where they gain valuable insights, revision strategies and expert advice to maximise HSC success. As students prepare to celebrate the completion of their schooling, they participate in the Red Frogs Safe Partying workshop, promoting safe decision-making, personal responsibility and strategies to support their wellbeing.

Year 12 students are also encouraged to embrace opportunities to lead, mentor younger students and contribute to the wider school community, leaving a lasting legacy as they complete their time at Maitland High School.
